More Than Just A Race

Where Donkeys & Community Come Together

After participating in my first burro race with Cracker Jack earlier this year, I can’t wait to bring this experience to Idaho.

Burro racing has a long tradition in parts of the western United States. It’s a tradition I’ve always wanted to bring to Idaho.

And we need your help to make it happen.

The River & Rails Donkey Dash will be Idaho’s first official pack burro race. A celebration of donkeys, the people who love them, and the mission of Happy Ass Burro Rescue.

Whether you race solo, run with a donkey, volunteer, sponsor the event, or simply come watch the fun, there’s a place for everyone to be part of this exciting race. It’s going to be a blast to watch.

And with the beautiful fall scenery along the Weiser River Trail, it’s the perfect excuse to spend a day outside with these incredible animals.

Every step of the race helps raise awareness and support for the rescued donkeys in our care.

Everything You Need To Know

Each entry includes an event t-shirt and swag bag.

Participants may choose to run with their donkey or run and walk solo. Both categories will be awarded separately.

  • Race Fees

    $65 per participant

     

  • Race Distances

    The race takes place on the beautiful Weiser River Trail, following the historic railroad corridor along the river.

    The trail offers scenic fall views and a well-maintained path that’s ideal for runners and donkeys alike.

    Participants can choose from three race distances.

    3 Mile Race: A great option for beginners or anyone wanting a shorter run.

    6 Mile Race: A moderate distance for runners looking for a bit more challenge.

    9 Mile Race: For experienced runners and donkeys ready for the full pack burro race experience.

    For the 9-mile race, donkeys must carry traditional burro race gear: Pack Saddle, Pick, Pan, and Shovel

  • Safety & Race Guidelines

    To ensure the safety of both participants and donkeys:

    • Veterinarian and first aid will be on site
    • Water and aid stations will be available along the course
    • All donkeys must be healthy to participate
    • Participants must maintain control of their donkey with the use of a lead rope
    • Mistreatment or unsafe handling of donkeys will result in immediate disqualification

    Overnight dry camping is available at the fairgrounds for those traveling with their donkeys.

What To Know Before Race Day

Do I Need Experience With Burro Racing?

No prior experience is required. The 3-mile and 6-mile races are great options for beginners. Participants should feel comfortable running or walking the course and sharing the trail alongside donkeys.

What Happens If My Donkey Refuses To Move?

Donkeys are known for thinking through situations before reacting. If your donkey decides to stop for a moment, patience is key. Treating your donkey with care and respect is always required during the race. And if for some reason your donkey gets off trail, don’t worry. Just return to the point where you left the course and continue the race from there.

Are Dogs Allowed At The Event?

For the safety of the donkeys and participants, all other animals should remain at home.

What Happens In Case Of Bad Weather?

The race will take place rain or shine. In the case of severe weather or unsafe trail conditions, updates will be communicated to registered participants.

What Should Participants Bring On Race Day?

Participants should bring comfortable running or hiking gear, water, sunscreen, and any equipment required for their race category (lead rope, etc.). Donkeys must be healthy and prepared for the course.

Can Businesses Become Sponsors Of The Race?

Yes. Local businesses are welcome and encouraged to support the event through sponsorships or by contributing items to the race swag bags. Sponsorship helps support the race and the mission of Happy Ass Burro Rescue.
