A Simple Beginning
How One Donkey Sparked A Mission
It all started because of a horse who needed a friend. And that friend was a donkey.
At the time, I had two horses. One was a senior horse, and I was afraid my younger horse would soon be left alone. When I came across donkeys in need of a home, I thought a donkey might be the perfect companion. That is when Happy Jack came into my life. And of course, life didn’t go as planned.
I unexpectedly lost my younger horse. Then my senior horse not long after. Suddenly, Happy Jack (the donkey) was the one in need of a companion.
To give Happy Jack a family, I brought in Cracker Jack and Pepper Jack. And somewhere along the way, as I spent more time with them, my love for donkeys grew into something much bigger.
I began to see how smart, soulful, and deeply connected these animals are. I also realized the impact they were having on me personally in ways I didn’t expect.
I often find myself asking, “Who’s really saving who?” and, honestly, I’m not sure.
What I do know is Happy Jack changed my life.
Donkeys are truly special. Intelligent, curious, and full of personality, they have a way of connecting with the people around them. But they also need safety, patience, and the comfort of not being alone.
Over time, that realization grew into a calling to rescue, protect, and care for these amazing burros in need.

Our mission is to rescue, protect, and provide lifelong sanctuary for donkeys in need while honoring the deep bonds they form with one another and the people who care for them.
Rescuing a donkey is not a temporary act of kindness. It’s a long-term promise.

Once a photographer, Kim now spends her days caring for the herd full-time, handling everything from training to daily care. Her deep love for donkeys and belief in the power of companionship continues to guide the mission of the rescue.
Rob - Chief Hay Wrangler
Co-Founder & VP
Rob is always ready to lend a hand around the sanctuary, from hauling hay to tackling the daily work that keeps things running smoothly. His steady support helps maintain the safe, well-run environment the donkeys rely on every day.

A Few Milestones Along The Way
Where It Began
It begins with Happy Jack, a donkey in need of a home, brought in for a horse in need of a friend.
2022
More donkeys in need of rescue arrive at the rescue, giving Happy Jack the companionship of a herd.
2025
Happy Ass Burro Rescue becomes an official 501(C)(3) nonprofit, welcomes more burros, and builds a community of volunteers and supporters.
Looking Ahead
Future dreams include rescuing and rehabilitating even more donkeys, while creating new ways for people to experience the unique connection they provide through therapy, hiking adventures, and more.
