The Donkey That Started It All

Happy Jack is naturally a bit introverted and tends to observe the world quietly before jumping in. But once he feels comfortable, his playful side quickly takes over. More often than not, he’s the one who starts the chase and kicks off the silly games with the other donkeys.
And when he’s not stirring up fun, Happy Jack gives some of the best hugs around.
He’s a calm, thoughtful observer, taking in the world with his big, soulful brown eyes.
It’s easy to see why he holds such a special place in the heart of the sanctuary and inspired the rescue that exists today.

Age: 8 years old
From: Arizona – Black Mountain Range
Pepper Jack is a big, beautiful goofball. Quiet, gentle, and full of affection. Though he tends to be reserved, his secretly hilarious side comes out at just the right moments.
He especially loves chasing Happy Jack around and stirring up a little playful mischief before settling back into his calm, collected self.
Age: 6 years old
From: Arizona – Black Mountain Range
Cracker Jack is the herd’s lovable clown. He’s mischievous, curious, and almost always finding his way into trouble.
It’s no surprise he’s often being chased around by Pepper Jack and Happy Jack after starting yet another round of antics. While he’s definitely the instigator, Cracker Jack is also incredibly sweet when he decides to be a good boy, melting hearts just as quickly as he stirs up chaos.

Poppy is the undeniable queen bee of the rescue. Smart, sassy, and irresistibly sweet.
She’s a breeze to work with right up to the moment she decides she already knows better. And honestly, she almost always does.
Poppy has the most adorable bray and is never shy about asking for all the love and attention she can get.
Age: 10 years old

Clover is the ultimate sweetheart. Gentle, loving, and endlessly endearing.
She looks at you with her big, beautiful brown eyes like you’re the best thing she’s ever seen. Trusting from day one, Clover loves being right by your side, practically in your back pocket.
Though she has a cautious streak, her kindness always shines through.

Sage is whip-smart, fiery, and full of spirit.
She had a tough start when she first arrived at the rescue, but she tries her absolute hardest every day. Beneath that strong personality is a truly beautiful soul, and the trust she gives is something incredibly special.
Sage is currently working through some medical challenges, and with care and time we believe she’ll soon be feeling her best and living the happy, comfortable life she deserves.

Star has the most beautiful brown eyes and a gentle, trusting nature.
She came to the rescue as an owner surrender and brought along an adorable six-month-old burrito, or baby burro. Though she’s been through a lot, Star continues to show incredible kindness and trust. We can’t wait to see her personality shine even more as she settles in.
When Star first met Poppy, the two immediately connected. They stood nose to nose as if they already knew each other and had been reunited.
To this day they remain best friends, always close by each other’s side. You rarely find one without the other.
Age: 7 months old
From: Born in captivity
Captain Jack Sparrow, better known as Captain Jack or CJ, is the youngest member of the herd.
CJ has bounced back to health even faster than his mom, Star, and keeps everyone entertained with his playful personality. He loves zooming around the bigger donkeys and showing off his adorable energy.
With his unforgettable hairdo and curious spirit, we can’t wait to watch his personality grow. One thing is certain, CJ is going to make an amazing pack burro racer someday.
Age: 2 years old
From: Nevada – Marietta Range
Willow is a ball of energy and always ready to play.
She loves chasing balls, carrying rubber pans around the pasture, and getting into just about anything that isn’t tied down. One of her favorite things to do is haul the Christmas trees placed in the pasture around and pile them up.
Willow makes sure there’s never a dull moment at the rescue. She’s endlessly entertaining and full of personality, but also incredibly kind.
Age: 5 years old
From: Nevada – Truckee
Sierra is still learning that she can trust the people around her.
She came to the rescue as an owner surrender and is taking her time settling in. Each day she grows a little more comfortable as we work patiently to earn her trust and help her feel better.
There’s a sweetness in her eyes that tells us the kind, gentle donkey she’s becoming. We can’t wait to see her confidence continue to grow.

Rose is a big, beautiful girl and taller than any of the other girls in the herd.
She came to the rescue as an owner surrender and is still settling in. With her soft, gentle eyes, you can tell she wants to trust the people around her.
With time, patience, and care, we know Rose will soon be feeling like herself again.
